Rock Show 58

A little bit of melody, a fast beat and some cutting edge guitar, with a Southern twist thrown in as well . Mix them all up, shake, not stir, and what do we get, Am Stereo, a great track from the 2008 Loose In The Joints album by The Dirty Truckers! Here we go then, Am Stereo and The Dirty Truckers.

Bob Dylan, Ah. Bob Dylan. Well, another fantastic track of his coming up, this time I’ve Barry McGuire’s version of one of Bob’s vey best tracks. And you can find this on  his 1991 album of the same title, it’s Eve Of Destruction with Barry McGuire! And does it do Dylan justice, Oh Yes!

Think The Kinks, with a sharp psychedelic edge, add in a bit of AOR and you’ll have Queens Of The Stone Age with a track from their 2013 Like Clockwork album, which album reached the UK #2 album spot and topped the US billboard 200 chart for the first time for them. Wow! They’re a rock band from Palm Desert California and the track is   I Appear Missing by Queens Of The Stone Age! This is a cracker of a track!

While we’re talking big-time, time for a track by Oasis from their seminal 1995 album of the Britpop years (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? It was a commercial success, but at the time the music critics were over-harsh, a perspective they since corrected. Let’s have the title track Morning Glory and Oasis. Terrific track!

I do like the title of the next one, Taloned Air. Perhaps the track doesn’t tear up the air totally, but it’s a near miss! It’s by Southern Irish rock band O Emperor  and it’s from their debut 2010 Hither Thither album and it’s definitely well worth a listen to!  A majestic name for an imperious band! Taloned Air by O Emperor.

I’m getting some strange beeps, I must get round to re-installing my sound editor, but they are quite musical! And quite musical well describes the next track!  It’s another one from Danish pop rock group Twoface’s 2003 Sounds Of A Rude World album, and it’s a love song, Beautiful To Me and it’s by Twoface.

The  US California melodic hard rock /metal band Electric Eels ), not to be confused with the Japanese band Electric Eel Shock, nor a fairly disreputable Ohio outfit with the same name but in lower case, produced one great self-titled album in 1984. And here’s the terrific track Excalibur from the album, by The Electric Eels.

The next one has a fleeting resemblance in parts to Woodstock by  Matthew’s Southern Comfort, at least in the drive of the beat and a bit of the melody.   It’s from Swedish band Deportees 2004 ‘All Prayed Up’ album. Well let’s hope it is right, but the title is  It Don’t Seem Right and it’s by the Deportees.

Ok, some hard rock coming up. It’s a single from US hard rockers Alice In Chains  1994 EP Jar Of Flies, re-recorded for their 1996 album titled Unplugged. And it was their first #1 hit and best known and most popular track. So it has made it onto my show now! No Excuses Alice In Chains

Gentle Giant were a British progressive rock band active between 1970 and 1980, known for their outstanding musicianship. They weren't successful commercially but have a lasting cult following. They in fact  recorded 11 albums. I’ve a prog psychedelic number from their 1974 album, same-titled as the track,  The Power And The Glory with band Gentle Giant. Enough to see perhaps why they are a bit of an acquired taste! Well worth a listen to all the same!

"Come as You Are" is a song by the American grunge band Nirvana, written by frontman Kurt Cobain and released as a single from the band's second album Nevermind in 1992. It was the band's second American Top 40 hit reaching #32, and second UK top 10 hit, at #9 in the UK. Come As You Are and it’s by Nirvana.

Some rock guides and encyclopaedias don’t include British symphonic rock group The Moody Blues, which is a surprise, as though they introduced using the flute in a rock band and often use orchestral accompaniments, they are very much a rock band. The song today is from Jeff Wayne's 1978 "The War of the Worlds"  Album. Well it’s Autumn-time right now, so appropriately here’s  the very melancholy Forever Autumn by The Moody Blues. Autumn breezes turning into a gale. Great track!

More hard driving rock, southern rock style from believe it or not French band The Shaggy Dogs. How can four Frenchmen who met up in Jogja city Indonesia knock out stunning R& B blues rock ‘n roll style? Well you’ll just have to listen to find out! From their 2006 album  One Runs At Midnight, here’s Keep On Driving and The Shaggy Dogs

US’s very lovely Kristin Diable from Louisiana certainly ain’t the quitting kind, the title of the next one coming right up. Though she did turn down a place on The Voice as it would have involved a 7 year tie-in for herself and her music to the show.  From Kristin Diable & The City’s 2012 self titled album, here’s Quittin’ Kind by Kristin Diable & The City. The Voice’s loss is well, our gain!

Well, how could I not play the next one. OK I put it into a show further down the road than I originally intended, but here we are! Sadly and in my opinion most undeservedly, he didn’t get through to the final in The Voice, but boy did you do some performances! If you haven’t guessed by now, it’s The Scientist (Coldplay Cover) and our very own Ragsy aka (Gary Ryland) recorded right very here in Dapperfm’s own studio! Let it rip Ragsy!

The next track has to be one of Rory Gallagher’s absolute best tracks on the planet. I bought his 1978 Photofinish album straight when it came out, with very good reason. It’s a great album with some stunning tracks! So without any more ado, Rory Gallagher and Cruise On Out !

Well we’re not cruising on out to the sunset yet, nor saying Goodbye at least for now to anything, as the next track suggests! In this next song, It's the time it takes from take off to reach a cruising altitude out of Sky Harbour International Airport, the time that it takes to truly leave the city. Leave behind everything there, and in the songs case, the time it takes to leave your past behind, to go on as a missionary.  From American rock band Jimmy Eat World’s 1999 album ClarityGoodbye Sky Harbor by Jimmy Eat World.

Well something of an interesting track the next one. It was moderately successful in the UK but only released as a single in the US two years after American rock band Incubus’s 2006 Light Grenades album. It’s a very different song to Nazareth’s much very much more well known song of the same title. And boy the sentiment, couldn’t be truer sometimes. Love Hurts with Incubus.

Next is the title track from remarkably talented Gene Cotton’s one and only 1976 album (Rain On). If only he had concentrated on a career as a musician. Well we can merely surmise on that one, as he chose instead helping young people into music and the arts.  Let’s have a listen to  Rain On and it’s by Gene Cotton. Well we’re getting to that time of year!

The song coming up next is from the perspective of a guy who is in love with a girl. He sees how ugly the world is and wants to protect her from it. He feels he's flawed and tries to keep his distance he says “when you feel my heat (when you’re drawn to me) look into my eyes it's where my demons hide (look into my eyes and see me for who I am)”  Imagine Dragons is an American alternative rock band with their debut album Night Visions out last year straight into the US #2 then #1 spot. Here from the album is  Demons by Imagine Dragons.

Mad Hatter2.0 are a hard rock band from South West UK who released the next track as a single only. They’ve a new album called Deconstruct out now. I’ll be having a couple more tracks by them later in the year or early next year. This one is Hurt (Empire Of Dirt) and Mad Hatter 2.0.

The big society expects us to behave in a ‘PC’ in inverted commas way. We sometimes need to and in fact must question this when big society gets this wrong or when it is contrary to our interest or expectations.  So, on with Arcade Fire’s track Rebellion subtitle (Lies) from their 2005 album Funeral. When ‘they’ in inverted commas tell us lies, we must rebel! Ok, Rebellion (Lies) and it’s by Arcade Fire.

We’ve time for some good ol’, except not so old, rock n roll this time from Slovenian rock band Stone Orange who’ve got a great one titled Rockin’ & Rollin’ and it is exactly that! From their current 2013 album The Dreamcatcher, Rockin’ & Rollin’ with Stone Orange.

The last but one today is on American rock band The Flaming Lips’ new 2013 album titled TheTerror,  which as you might expect from the title is quite a dark album. As it happens, quite unusual for them as a band, who usually do something more up-beat. The track is about why we should love at all.  But we do! This is a (Live) version of Try To Explain and The Flaming Lips.

I’m playing the next track last on today’s show, simply because it’s so good anything else might seem lame after it! If I say it’s Mike Oldfield and his best composition, you’ll get the gist. It hit the #1 spot in very many countries and is an all-time outright rock classic! Still leaves me wonderfully amazed, even after all these years. It’s from his 1983 Crises album and the singing is by Scottish Maggie Reilly .  What a tune!!!! Moonlight Shadow and Mike Oldfield

Rock Show 59

I'm opening the show today with "Black Water" which is a song by the American music group The Doobie Brothers from their 1974 album What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits. It hit the US #1 spot and was written after their visit to the New Orleans area  to see and find out about black culture. Ok it’s Black Water   and The Doobie Brothers .

What would you get if you mixed up  Y&T (that’s Yesterday and Tomorrow) , Budgie and Motley Crue? Well I think I know the answer.  I’ve another one by the California Electric Eels from their 1984 self-titled and only album.  Just to re-iterate this is a great band, as opposed to the similarly named very rough Ohio outfit who themselves  use lower case in their band name, and who’s music is rubbish!  Let’s have Fast As I Can  by the Electric Eels!

Ok time to really get the rock fires lit up and set the rock show alive and alight! Southern Rock style! "Love Is Alive" is a 1976 hit single by Gary Wright reaching No. 2 in the US charts, from his album The Dream Weaver, released the previous year. Coming up right now,  Love Is Alive  with  Gary Wright.

"Nobody's Fool" is the second single and power ballad by rock band Cinderella from their 1986 Night Songs album.  It charted at number thirteen in the US, just a bit lower than their best selling 1988 single    "Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)” at #12 in the US charts.   Right then, Nobody's Fool   and it’s by Cinderella.

I’ve played some of the tracks from Arcade Fire’s 2010  album The Suburbs, and we’re now back firmly in the city in suburbia with the title track from the album. Sometimes title tracks on albums are pretty good tracks, sometime you takes your choice! This one ain’t at all bad, hint of the kinks again and all that! This being one of two tracks from the album also released as a limited edition 12” single. It’s  The Suburbs   by Arcade Fire.

I haven’t somewhat surprisingly had any tracks yet by American Numetal  band Korn, with a K, so time to put that right I think!  "Blind" is a song written by them for their 1994 self-titled debut album and released as first single from the album. The song almost led to a court case as the album didn't acknowledge one of the two song writers, being put right on a later compilation album!  Next then, Blind  by Korn  band

I’ve another one next by Danish band Twoface, that’s one word incidentally, again from their 2003 album Sounds Of A Rude World. Very nice track it is too, and it’s called Fire In Your Eyes (Ay Ay)   with with  Twoface band.

I do like Louna’s music stuff!  That’s spelt L O U N A. Louna is a Russian Alternative/Punk rock band, from Moscow formed  in 2008 and they've 3 albums to date. They won the best new alternative artist award in 2009.  Most of their tracks are in Russian, but the tracks they’ve English versions for I’ll be playing when I can, starting with  the 2013 single Mama. The absolutely stunning  Mama  by   Louna.

The next track, the winner of the 2013 Eurovision contest is interesting in that it is remarkably similar to  a 2003 single by K-Otic titled Surrender, which I’ve ready to play in a later show.  The similarity really is striking, with the intro and some other parts absolutely identical. You can hear them both side by side on YouTube and decide if you think the earlier song was copied!  Certainly seems like it! Here we are then Only Teardrops  with, I won’t say by Emmelie de Forest .

I’m going to the 2006 One Runs At Midnight album again by Canadian Duo The Shaggy Dogs who are Dann Downes and Grant Heckman. Grant since 2009 has concentrated on playing the Blues.  Dann on the other hand has continued writing roots/alt-country songs.  Ok this one is  Wandering Boy  and  The Shaggy Dogs.

Another extremely fine one by Irish Rory Gallagher coming up next. This is a real stormer of a rock track, rugged chunky rock with Rory’s incredible guitar work  and a suitably haunting blues-rock melody. From his 1978 album Photo-Finish   Cloak & Dagger  with  Rory Gallagher.

Like dreamy rock with an edge to it? Here’s one that fits the bill from Slovenian rockers Stone Orange that fits very well on their  2013 The Dreamcatcher album. The title feels familiar at least here in Wales in the valleys. It Keeps On Raining and  Stone Orange. Why doesn’t the rain stop more often?!

Even at  age 70, Ian Hunter (former frontman of Mott The Hoople) can serve up more seething vitriol at a world gone wrong than would-be rebels 50 years his junior, lambasting the shallowness and corrosiveness of modern life. And what better than the title track from his 2009 Man Overboard album. Look out, there’s a Man Overboard  and it’s by  Ian Hunter.

Las Vegas based rockers Imagine Dragons, realized a few years back that it was all starting to come together for them as a band. Lucky for us too! I’ve the lead track from their 2013 Night Visions album. and it’s Radioactive   with Imagine Dragons band.

I’ve sometimes a job to find out when a single was first released with some sources giving alternate or incorrect dates and then there are vinyl and CD releases to sometimes cause more confusion.  Anyway this next one is from 1987 as a single, and on Bon Jovi’s 1986 album Slippery When Wet. The track is  Wanted Dead Or Alive  and  Bon Jovi.

Moving over to Ireland again next with Eire band O Emperor.  Another problem with album releases is where they are released, this one coming out in Ireland in 2011, but not until 2012 in the UK. This is a great song and quite likely the best on their Hither Thither  album. It’s chilled and blissed and the guitar and whistling really bring up the mood. Don't Mind Me  by  O Emperor.

How many of you have heard of the band Lemon Bird? Not too many I expect.  They’re a hard rock band from Sweden. The sentiments of the track title can’t be disputed. It’s  Look Out For Love and  Lemon Bird from their 2010 album The Hangman And The Jury. Tremendous terrific track! Look Out For Love and  Lemon Bird

"Mermaid" is a song by American roots pop rockers Train band from their 2012 and sixth studio album, California 37. Their 2009 runaway success with Hey, Soul Sister in fact iTunes 2010 best seller, has reinvigorated them and in California 37 they explore brave new territory for them as a band, musically and lyrically. Touch of comedy about this one!  It’s a Mermaid  with  Train  band.

Gorillaz are, of course, very much a top-name band, a tremendous result for what started out as a music collaboration project.  I’m hoping they’ll soon have another album out, but while we wait, I’m going back to the lead track from their debut 2001 album self-titled Gorillaz. Make what you will of the lyrics of this one, whether it’s singing well-known songs to try to get famous, or stocking up again with hash.   Re Hash by  Gorillaz virtual band.

A different kind of joints, as in getting moving, Loose In The Joints is a 2008 album by The Dirty Truckers. Once content to be the closest thing Boston had to The Replacements (certainly not a bad thing!), they’ve really come into their own and come alive with this album. I’m playing from the album the track,  3 Weeks To Go  and it’s by The Dirty Truckers!  Don’t you just love bands that are absolutely on fire!!

Breaking up is never easy to do, and often leaves heartaches for more years than we care to remember, sometimes lifelong in fact. Well this one from 2009 Clan Destiny album by Wishbone Ash sure gets this across. It’s right on the button. Just wish we could have light out of darkness sometimes! Here we go then Dreams Outta Dust and  Wishbone Ash.

Ok, it’s as much pop as rock, but it’s an all-time classic by Nazareth, and having said that you probably can guess, especially after the last one, this is Love Hurts by  Nazareth  an absolutely smash hit, as a single from their 1975 Hair of the Dog  album.  Originally a 1960 Everly brothers song and also covered by Jim Capaldi here in the UK also in 1975.  It sure does sometimes,   Love Hurts with  Nazareth.

"My God Is the Sun" is a single by badass American California band Queens of the Stone Age from their sixth studio album, Like Clockwork (2013), for which album fans had to wait six years, but what a result!  Hard as nails Blow your mind and set your nethers alight with this storming rock track!  Here’s My God Is The Sun   and by Queens of the Stone Age.

Last but one today, I’ve another one by Gene Cotton, not a huge rocker, more a soft or pop rock aficionado! But oh so sweet rock, this time southern style! From his 1976 Rain On album, and yes we are here in Wales!  Don’t you just love Sweet Destiny and  it’s Gene Cotton.

I’m closing the show today with a Wilco track covered by Jimmy Eat World as it’s such a great version. They formed up as a band in 1993 and It’s from Jimmy Eat World’s 2010  Invented,  seventh album, but only on the Deluxe Edition. You And I    Jimmy Eat World (Wilco Cover).

Rock Show 60

Some of the commentary is shorter today as there are some longer tracks to fit in.

I’m opening today’s show with the title track by popular Caribbean  band  Eruption  from their 2009 album All Screwed Up.    Eruption was a popular disco, R&B and soul band in the 1970s and 1980s. All Screwed Up   and  Eruption.  Not quite Vesuvius, but let’s see how they blow our stack!

From his 2009 self-titled album I’ve Alex Hutchings , a UK Bristol based rock, funk jazz and R&B guitarist and composer who has toured throughout the UK, Europe and South Africa as well as writing numerous compositions for various sometimes very well known BBC TV shows and series.  The track is   Feeling Fine with  Alex Hutchings. Are we all feeling fine?  I do so hope so!

I’ve played the Dylan original, a Rolling Stones cover and now I’ve another great cover by Jeff Beck of Like A Rolling Stone. It’s actually by Seal and jeff beck and can be found on the 2011 tribute album Chimes of Freedom  4 Cd set.     Here’s   Like A Rolling Stone by Seal &  Jeff Beck.

"Songbird" is a song by English rock band Oasis, from their 2002 fifth studio album Heathen Chemistry, reaching the UK #3 spot. There are some songs that simply blow your head off when you first listen to them, because they are simple and direct, and so it is with Songbird, by Oasis.

One next by the Stereophonics from their 2013 Graffiti On A Train album, which is an album that starts off with some great tracks! We Share The Same Sun  and  The Stereophonics.

Roulette are a Swedish band who formed up in 1985, changing their band name to Cherry Red in 1990. A recording deal secured an album, but it wasn’t released then, whence they became and still are a Def Leppard cover band. The songs have since been released as an album Better Late Than Never in 2008 under their original band name Roulette. The title and lead track is titled somewhat very appropriately Better Late Than Never! And it’s by  Roulette  band.

"For What It's Worth" is a song written by Stephen Stills performed by American rock band Buffalo Springfield and released as a single in 1967; It was added to the 1967 re-release of their first album, Buffalo Springfield. The single peaked at number seven in the US and is currently ranked #63 on Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.  Ok it’s For What It's Worth  and  Buffalo Springfield

Slovenian rockers Stone Orange have a track on their 2013 album The Dreamcatcher titled Lovetron. Not sure if this is robotized or automated love from the title? Whatever, it’s a great track! Lovetron   by Stone Orange.

Ok, from Gorillaz’s  2001self-titled album here’s a track titled  Starshine.

Train band have some great tracks on their 2012 California 37 album. Train turns earnest again with We Were Made For This, but not so much so that it can't toss out a few more pop culture nods, including clever shout-outs to Bay Area totems such as the Grateful Dead, Sly & the Family Stone, "The Last Waltz" and Winterland.  Right, We Were Made For This   and it’s by Train  band.

Southern Irish band O Emperor are really going places. Here’s another from their 2012 Hither Thither album.   Catch 22 and   O Emperor  band.

Gorgeous Kristin Diable has some delightful and terrific tracks on her 2012 album Kristin Diable & The City. This one is Guess It's Gonna Take Some Time  with  Kristin Diable & The City.

This next one by Rory Gallagher has a real kick to it. It’s from his 1978 Photo Finish album and called Overnight Bag  by Rory Gallagher.

The Beach boys weren’t always the rockiest of bands,  but here’s an exception to prove the rule.  Pure rock ‘n roll, Status Quo style, from the Beach Boys 1971 album Surf’s Up, a great album by the way. It’s Student Demonstration Time  and The Beach Boys .

"Welcome to the Jungle" is a single by American hard rock band Guns N' Roses, featured on their 1987 debut studio album, Appetite for Destruction and it made it to #7 in the US, #24 in the UK. Ok, Welcome To The Jungle   with Guns N' Roses.

Canadian Duo The Shaggy dogs have the one 2006 album One Runs At Midnight.  This from the album is Distant Parade  by The Shaggy Dogs.

I’ve another one again from 2006, from Wishbone Ash’s Clan Destiny album.  It’s Healing Ground   and Wishbone Ash.

Some things in life turn out to be much simpler than we think. Well, The Dirty Truckers are great rockers, here’s a  terrific track Simple As That  from their 2008 album  Loose In The Joints with The Dirty Truckers and Simple As That.

Just for a change, there’s another album also titled Better late Than Never but this time by New York AOR band Surrender.  It was recorded in 1991 as a very rare issue, then again most appropriately given just how good an album it is, re-released in 2013.  Got myself a mp3 album copy from Amazon. Ok, Thought You Should Know    and Surrender  band.

The next one did better in the UK at # 5 compared with #23 in the US, and it’s by Bon Jovi. "Who Says You Can't Go Home" is a single written by Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora for the American rock band Bon Jovi's 2005 ninth studio album Have a Nice DayWho Says You Can't Go Home ,  Bon Jovi

Another from Gene Cotton’s   1076 Rain On album  is simply titled  Young Lover,  by  Gene Cotton.

Put some big names together and what do you get? Living Loud is the self-titled debut album by the hard rock project Living Loud, formed by bass guitarist Bob Daisley and drummer Lee Kerslake in 2003. Both men had previously recorded with Ozzy Osbourne, writing and recording on the Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman albums. Australian rock singer Jimmy Barnes and Deep Purple guitarist Steve Morse were also part of the project. Keyboard player Don Airey, who also worked on Osbourne's albums with Kerslake and Daisley, recorded his parts of the album at his home studio in London.  Half the songs were originals and half were covers from Osbourne's first two albums, which Kerslake and Daisley had co-written.  Ok, this one is an original number Every Moment A Lifetime and  Living Loud  band.

Belladonna are an Italian black rock band formed in 2005, who have four albums to date. This next track is from their 2013 Shooting Dice With God album, and it’s titled In My Demon's Name   by  Belladonna.

California rock band  Queens of The Stone Age  released their sixth album Like Clockwork in 2013. Here we are then,   Smooth Sailing from the album and   Queens of The Stone Age.

To close today’s show, Louna (L O U N A) are a terrific Russian hard rock/alternativepunk band, who get a huge lot of Russian airplay, very deservedly, and you can find them at lounarocks.com. Though most of their tracks are presently in Russian, from their 2010 Let’s get Louder album , here’s the tremendous, recorded in English,  Up There and   Louna band. Hope they do many many more English recordings!
