Rock Show 73

Brazilian rock band King Bird have2 albums and and 2 EPs to their credit. For my opening track today,  I’ve the title track  from their latest and 2012 Beyond The Rainbow EP. Here we are then, Beyond the Rainbow  with  King Bird band.

Hard Reyne is the second solo album by Australian rock musician, singer/songwriter James Reyne, released in 1989. he was a member of the noted and iconic Australian rock group Crawl, before embarking on a solo career.  From the album, here’s the track House Of Cards by  James Reyne.

No apologies for the next track having some or most of the lyrics in German.  Herbert Grönemeyer (GRENE) started out as an actor before turning to music, and is the most successful German musician, with two of his albums respectively being the best selling and third best selling albums in Germany over past years. The track I’m playing is a single and on his 1988 “Ö” (as u in hurt)that’s O with two dots above it!  album. Right Vollmond   (as from the Opera)  and Herbert Grönemeyer.

Set two years after the Summer of Love in 1967, and moving to Canada, I’ve song recorded by Canadian recording artist Bryan Adams, from his fourth album, Reckless (1984). It was also released as a single so with Summer Of '69 I’ve  Bryan Adams.

"Perfect" is a single taken from French-Canadian rock band Simple Plan's 2003 debut album, No Pads, No Helmets... Just Balls, which features acoustically in the film Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen starring Lindsay Lohan and as is in the game Karaoke Revolution 2. Ok,   Perfect  and  Simple Plan band.

After the Rain is the 1990 debut album by American rock group Nelson, spending 64 weeks in the charts going multi-Platinum in the process. It has their #1 hit, "(Can't Live Without Your) Love and Affection" and the follow-up single,  I'm playing today "After the Rain", which reached #6 in the US charts. Well we are indeed After The Rain  and it’s by  Nelson band.

Vain is an American heavy  metal and glam band, formed in 1986. I've another track from their 2011 album Enough Rope. This one is simply titled Greener and it's a great bit of a rocker! Greener  with  Vain band.

I’ve another one next by a Swedish hard rock band, again from their really excellent 2009 debut album Infinite Stargaze that Amazon has erroneously got listed as 2011. And the track is titled Night Falls  by Coldspell.

I do like this next one.   'Addict' are a great band filled with killer rock melodies but have sadly only recorded just  the one album Stones in 1998. They are a British band, with a Danish born guitarist and you can find all the tracks on YouTube.  Ok, the Wow title track Stones  and  Addict  band.

Pilgrimage is the second album by British rock band Wishbone Ash.  The album focuses more on folk and acoustic music but the track Vas Dis is a more bluesy and hard rock number.  Here then Vas Dis  by  Wishbone Ash

Well a major pop-rock hit single next, and if I say Vanessa Carlton you’ll probably guess, it’s her really great, as in really great track A Thousand Miles", originally titled "Interlude",  by American singer Vanessa Carlton and recorded for her 2002 album Be Not Nobody. Absolutely love this one.  A Thousand Miles  Vanessa Carlton.

"Erase/Rewind" is a pop rock song written by Peter Svensson and Nina Persson for the very good Swedish rock band The Cardigans as a single for their 1998 album Gran Turismo, which also features in the closing credits to the film The Thirteenth Floor.  And it did best in the UK reaching the #7 spot. Ok, let’s have Erase Rewind   and  The Cardigans band.

"Lotus Flower" is a song by English alternative rock band Radiohead  released in 2011 on their eighth album The King of Limbs. The song is about "the magic of losing yourself in music and the senses" who could disagree with that! and perhaps surprisingly hasn't been released as a single.  Here’s Lotus Flower  with  Radiohead.

"Stay the Night" is a song by German/Russian electro dance music producer Zedd, from the deluxe edition of his debut 2012 album, Clarity. It features vocals from Hayley Williams, lead singer of American rock group Paramore.   Ok Stay The Night  and  Zedd  ft. Hayley Williams.

A really great and very beautiful track next by US psychedelic rock band Jefferson Airplane from their 1967 album Surrealistic Pillow. The UK release which I particularly like has some different tracks to the US version, with the much later CD version differing again! Today   by Jefferson Airplane.

Ceremonial is the 1985 second album released by the American Post-Punk band Savage Republic; The band  initially being named Africa Corps. The album has since 1990 been re-issued accompanied by the EP Trudge.  I’ve the title track Ceremonial   with  Savage Republic  band.

Split Enz were one of the most successful New Zealand musical acts of the 1980s. "I Got You" is a 1980 song and single by them from their album True Colours of the same year. It is Split Enz's most  successful single,  and in 2001 it was voted 11th best New Zealand song of all time.   I Got You  and  Split Enz.

Next, one from The 1998 Unknown Legends of Rock and Roll album.  Penelope Houston has sporadically written and recorded for 25 years a string of pretty acoustic folk LPs, with her lyrics being her  strong point.  More surprisingly she started off as a punk  queen, renowned for her punk music as possibly the very best female punk singer while she led the US 'Avengers' punk band. This one is from her 1996 “Cut You” audio cassette. Let’s have some Qualities of Mercy  with Penelope Houston.

Moontan is an album by Dutch rock band Golden Earring, released in 1973. It was voted best Dutch pop album ever by readers of one of the country's best known music magazines Oor in 2008 and In the Q & Mojo Classic Special Edition Pink Floyd & The Story of Prog Rock, the album came #32 in its list of "40 Cosmic Rock Albums".  From the album here's The Vanilla Queen by Golden Earring.

"Where the Streets Have No Name" by Irish rock band U2 is the opening track from their brilliant 1987 album The Joshua Tree, also released as a single. It's matter-of-factly about it being possible to make out a person's religion and income by the street they live in, particularly in Belfast.  Because of difficulties getting the sound they wanted the producer considered at one stage starting again from scratch! But they got there!  Where The Streets Have No Name  and it’s by U2.

RPWL is a German progressive rock band who formed up in 1997. They’ve released 11 albums, with the band's name coming from the first letters of the original four members surnames.  I’ve a track from their 2008 seventh album  The RPWL Experience.  It’s Choose What You Want To Look At  and  RPWL band.

I’ve another one from the very recent 2014 album for a side project by some members of Ten Years After, calling themselves One Hundred Seventy Split.  The album is H.S.S. and the track Never Saw It Coming   with Hundred Seventy Split, who take temporary splits from TYA to do new stuff,  as TYA mostly stick with what they've done before. Never Saw It Coming  by  Hundred Seventy Split.

Tommy Castro is an American blues, R&B and rock guitarist and singer from San Jose who started out musically at the age of 10.  After playing with the Dynatones until 1991 he  led his own band The Tommy Castro Band for 13 albums, but now has a new band The Painkillers and a 2014 album The Devil You Know. And the track is She Wanted To Give It To Me  with  Tommy Castro and The Painkillers.

"To the Moon and Back" is a single by Australian group Savage Garden from their  1996 self-named debut album Savage Garden. It climbed to #3 in the UK and was their first #1 back home for them in Australia. You might well remember them for Truly Madly Deeply, here’s Savage Garden To The Moon & Back.

Jackson C Frank’s life mostly didn’t go according to plan.  He had a very rough time of things from losing 15 school friends in a school boiler explosion, with fate often later as well being unkind to him. However he did have one lucky spell in the UK staying with Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel who helped him produce his one and only 1965 self-named album Jackson C. Frank.  Such a shame that someone so musically talented wasn’t able to do more musically. I just love the guitar work on this one!  And the title?  You Never Wanted Me by Jackson C Frank to close the show today.

Rock Show  74

I’m starting today’s show with another track from Swedish hard rock band Coldspell’s 2011 Infinite Stargaze album.  Some of  the very best metal recently  is from Sweden, Germany, and the other Scandinavian countries, and has been for quite some time these days.  And the track  All I Want  by  Coldspell.

"Boogie with Stu" is a song by English rock band Led Zeppelin on their 1975 album Physical Graffiti. It was a jam recorded in 1971 when the band had done most of the recording for their fourth album. They were using the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio and were accompanied by Rolling Stones' road manager and pianist, Ian Stewart, who ended up jamming with the band on piano, which is basically how and why it came about. OK,  Boogie With Stu  and  Led Zeppelin.

"House of Cards" is a song by English rock band Radiohead from their 2007 seventh album titled In Rainbows. It went on to obtain nominations for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal; Best Rock Song; and Best Short Form Music Video at the 51st Grammy Awards. Ok let’s have House Of Cards  Radiohead and hope they don’t all fall down!

Arcade was a California US glam metal band formed in 1991 originally proposed  to have been named Taboo. They went on to release several very worthy albums before disbanding in 1994. Their 1993 self-titled album Arcade featured two tracks that charted on the US rock top 30 chart. I’ve another track from the album though, called Never Goin' Home by  Arcade band.

Sankara  is a song from 'Aisha Kandisha’s Jarring Effects'  1991 album El Buya.  Starting in the late 80's as a traditional Shabee dance band, this Morrocan quintet became one of the few North African acts to successfully merge traditional and modern sounds into something really quite remarkable. Aisha Kandisha’s Jarring Effects and Sankara.

"Are ‘Friends' Electric?" is a song by English New Wave band Tubeway Army from their 1979 album Replicas. It was released as a single in 1979 reaching No. 1 in the UK Singles Chart, staying there for four weeks.  It was written and produced by Gary Numan, the band's frontman and lead vocalist. Ok, Are ‘Friends’ Electric  Gary Numan & his Tubway Army.

D.C.B.A. -25  is a pretty melodic psychedelic track by Jefferson Airplane from their 1967 album Surrealistic Pillow, with some haunting melody and ethereal vocals.  The with rhythmic cadences make it one of the many highlights of the album. The dreamy  D.C.B.A. -25  by Jefferson Airplane.  Great lyrics, great tune! And of course the inimitable Grace Slick, singing alongside Paul Kantner, who wrote the song!

Keep the Faith Bon Jovi's 1992 and fifth album represents the beginning of a new chapter for Bon Jovi, marking a change in both the band's image and sound. Moving away from their early metal roots in previous albums, it introduced a more "rock 'n roll" driven groove to Bon Jovi's sound. From the album here’s  I Want You with Bon Jovi.

The Deviants PTO OFF! was the first album of its kind:, a sheer, psychedelic punk gunk unpretty in your face, trend-setting British recording cut in the autumn of ’67. “The Nothing Man” is one of several tracks on the album that burn with the elemental fury of “we suck, we know it, F you” attitude that was unique at its time. Not many copies were pressed, but boy did this set things off! Also to be found on the Unknown Legends Of Rock And Roll album. The Nothing Man and The Deviants.

"Please...I'm losing my mind!" declares Andy Ellison at the outset of the 1966 single, "Smashed Blocked"  by John's Children, and as the psychedelic mayhem builds and builds, there's no reason to doubt him.  Then just before the track freaks itself out into oblivion, it glides into an off-kilter, moony adolescent ballad, punctuated by more strange spaced-out vocals in the periodic choruses.  "Nobody had ever done anything like that--ever," at the time.  The remarkable Smashed Blocked  and it’s by Johns Children.

Can’t believe I haven’t played the next one before.  I must have stencilled it in then somehow lost the plot! "Bad Moon Rising" is a song written by John Fogerty by US rock band Creedence Clearwater Revival. It was the lead single from their 1969 album Green River released in 1969, four months before the album. The song reached No. 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart. Fogerty claims the song is about "the apocalypse that was going to be visited upon us".  Bad Moon Rising  with Creedence Clearwater Revival.

July were an English psychedelic rock band active around 1968 and 69. The band's music was a blend of psychedelic rock and pop, marked by lush harmonies, acoustic guitars, keyboards, and intricate lead guitar work. Although none of the band's records managed to chart in the UK or the US,  July are today best remembered for their songs "My Clown", "Dandelion Seeds", and "The Way", which have all been included on various compilation albums over the years.  Today I'm playing their song Dandelion ,  and  July band.

"It's My Life" is  the title track by the British New Wave synthpop group Talk Talk on the band's 1984 and second album It's My Life, also released as a single. Though it did poorly in the charts at the time, on a third re-release in 1990 it hit the #13 spot in the UK becoming the band's most successful single. Talk Talk have often been compared to Duran Duran. They have of course no link whatsoever to the Talk Talk phone company.  Had they continued beyond 1991, I am sure the phone company would have been sued over the name!  Right, It's My Life and  Talk Talk band.

Dutch rock band Kane put their musical inspiration down to U2, Pearl Jam, Queen and Nirvana. Can't argue with that! Their song Rain Down On Me first appeared as a single from their 2002 album So Glad You Made It.   AOR as it happens, but great stuff and plenty of guitar rock!   Rain Down On Me with  Kane.

The next one is a really terrific track! American hard rock band Blue Oyster Cult’s self-named debut album of 1971 has to be one of the best albums of the 70s. Blue Öyster Cult toured with artists such as The Byrds, Alice Cooper and the Mahavishnu Orchestra to support the album, and one music critic described the album as "the tightest and most musical hard rock record since - dare he say it - Who's Next" And the track Then Came The Last Days Of May  by Blue Oyster Cult.

Another well-known and famous track next, and can Patti Smith belt out rock vocals! "Because the Night" was jointly written by Patti Smith and Bruce Springsteen and released in 1978 as a single off the Patti Smith Group's album Easter. It rose to #13 in the US and #5 over here in Britain. It probably isn't mostly known in fact that Bruce Springsteen attempted to record it, and not being satisfied with the result, thankfully he offered it to Patti to record.  Because The NIght  The Patti Smith Group.

Great music doesn’t always have to be popular, as is evidenced by the next track.  Marillion are a British rock band, formed in 1979. They are perhaps the most successful band to emerge from the UK’s 1980s neo-progressive rock scene, though their 15 million records sales is very modest compared to many earlier bands record sales. Around 25,000 hits for some of their YouTube offerings, not that high in the YouTube stakes or scheme of things . Their 1991 album Holidays in Eden includes the song "Dry Land" which Hogarth had written and previously also recorded with the band How We Live.  Dry Land here by  Marillion.

Dutch band Golden Earring referred to  British rock and roll singer VinceTaylor in their 1976 live performances, and their recording, Live, the song "Just Like Vince Taylor". The song appears first well before this though on their on their 1973 Moontan album. And it’s Just Like Vince Taylor and Golden Earring band.

I've a track next by Australian rock musician and singer/songwriter James Reyne who as well as belonging to the iconic 80s band Australian Crawl has also pursued a very successful solo career.  I’ve a track from his 2004 solo album Speedboats For Breakfast and it’s titled The Rainbow's Dead End  with  James Reyne.

Argus is the 1972 third album by the British rock band Wishbone Ash,  the most popular Ash album and widely considered their greatest by fans and reviewers alike, so much so, it was named "Album of the Year" in the 1972 year-end issue of Sounds magazine. In fact not a single dud track on the entire album, all being most most excellent!  This one is  Throw Down The Sword  and it’s by Wishbone Ash.

I’ve a great and really melodic track next by Fish.  Derek William Dick, better known as Fish is a neo- progressive Scottish singer songwriter with his own self-named band.  He earlier in his career had some time belonging to the band I played just  a bit earlier Marillion. Let’s have a listen to the very beautiful track titled  Blind to the Beautiful  from Fish’s 2013 album A Feast of Consequences.

Lightning Bolt is the 2013 tenth  album by the outstanding American rock band Pearl Jam. Its release was delayed for about a year and a half because of band members involvement in side projects. It marks the return of the band to their old and most successful style of music.  The track I’m playing from the album is called Getaway by  Pearl Jam. Are we planning a getaway?!

Ten Year’s After’s two band members’ side project Hundred Seventy Split  has spawned the very excellent 2014 album H.S.S.  I’m hoping they keep doing more new stuff, as they are really most very excellent! From the album I’ve King Of The Blues  by Hundred Seventy Split

"Rebel Love Song" is a single by American rock band, Black Veil Brides, from their 2011 and second album Set the World on Fire. The song is about the idea of finding something that you can run to, about making that Utopian society in your head and doing what you can to bust out and get there. And it went on to win the Kerrang! Award for Best Single. Ok, Rebel Love Song  and The Black Veil Brides.

We’ve just had St Patrick’s Day so I have to have something Irish on the show today! Loveless is the second album by Irish alternative rock band My Bloody Valentine.  The album was recorded over a two-year period between 1989 and 1991 in nineteen different recording studios with its reputed £250,000 recording cost nearly bankrupting the record label! They went very out of their way to get exactly the sound they wanted. A re-mastered version was released in 2012. And the track to close today’s show - What You Want  with My Bloody Valentine band.
